Austin Ad Federation Hosts Hispanic Marketing Symposium

The Austin Advertising Federation is hosting its first annual Hispanic
Marketing Symposium (HMS) on November 11, 2009, 11:00am-2:00 pm, at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center at UT-Austin.

The HMS luncheon will be highlighted by nationally recognized Hispanic market
experts: Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, Professor of Medicine and Director of the
Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the School of Medicine,
UCLA; advertising guru Sergio Alcocer, President and Chief Creative Officer of
the award-winning Austin-based advertising agency, LatinWorks; and Danny
Cervantes and Tommy Thompson, who collaborate as client and agency on
McDonalds’ Hispanic efforts. The event will be moderated by Becky Arreaga, a
partner in Mercury Mambo, a Hispanic experiential marketing, sales promotions,
and branding agency.

Dr. Hayes-Bautista is an expert on Hispanic health issues and the author of
“Southwest’s Mexican Roots: The Untold Stories” which explores the
history of Mexicans in the Southwestern U.S. Mr. Alcocer has developed many
high profile campaigns, including Bud Light’s ads for the 2007 Super Bowl,
and has captured top awards including the Cannes Lions Festival, FIAP, CLIOs,
national Addy’s, and the Grand Prix at Festival Caribe. Danny Cervantes is
McDonald’s Regional Marketing Manager. Together with Tommy Thompson, the
Latin-born president of iNSPIRE, Mr. Cervantes is leveraging the Hispanic
market, leading his region to outperform others across the McDonald’s system.

Latinitas Magazine seeks program leaders

Latinitas is accepting applications for after school program leaders for its elementary, middle and high school Club Latinitas and iMedia clubs. Latinitas is the first digital magazine made for and by young Latinas and is also a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Hispanic girls through media and technology. Club activities include lessons in writing, editing, web and graphic design, photography, radio and video broadcast and more. Leaders manage clubs including 10 – 15 Hispanic girls and/or teens. Training is provided.
The ideal intern will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Interns should be organized, resourceful, creative, enthusiastic, and proactive. We are looking for someone who is able to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience working with children preferred. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. This position is recommended for students with a major in communications, social work, or education. Interns must be computer literate, demonstrating proficiency with Microsoft Office and Internet navigation. Interns must be able to establish and maintain a good rapport and harmonious relationships with students, staff, and school administrators. Having a car is encouraged, but not required.
Latinitas provides an educational paid stipend at the successful completion of this internship position. Volunteer leaders welcome to. Many interns arrange to receive academic and/or service learning credits for their work through their school. Position starts asap; interns must be willing to commit 10 hours per week for an entire school year. Interns must be available from 2:00-6:00pm at least two days a week – Mon.- Fri. Hours and days of work are flexible.
Job Responsibilities:
• Mentors youth and develop a one-on-one relationship with youth
• Co-facilitates a media empowerment program for girls (4th-12th graders)
• Collaborates with another community educator to lead group sessions
• Plans and assists at media and technology workshops
• Develops and implements curriculum for after-school program

• Assists in our survey data collection and data entry
• Organize field trips, special events & projects as needed
• Promotes program on school campuses and recruits club members
• Acts as editor for junior reporters

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) is seeking a Capacity-Building Strategist in its California office. The Strategist will develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to increase the capacity of California Affiliates to affect policy outcomes. This includes development and implementation of systems, policies, and processes for nurturing, supporting, and advancing advocacy work among NCLR Affiliates and other partner CBOs in California.

Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations (CBOs), NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas—assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families.
