Record $80 Mil. Univision-Zubi Deal Sets Stage for Solid Hispanic TV Market

The Hispanic TV upfront was much more active for top-rated Spanish-language network Univision than No. 2 Telemundo last week, with Univision completing a record-setting, $80 million cross-platform deal with Hispanic media agency Zubi Advertising. The net also expected to finalize deals with two mainstream agencies by early this week.
Telemundo—while in negotiations with assorted agencies, including Zubi—had not wrapped any major deals as of last week.
The Univision-Zubi deal had been in the works for about two months, after an initial meeting among Zubi president/CEO Joe Zubi, Univision CEO Joe Uva, and David Lawenda, the net’s ad sales/marketing president. First reported by Mediaweek.com last week, it involved all Univision media assets and many Zubi clients, including Ford, American Airlines and SC Johnson.

¿Habla Español? Now, M&M’s Speaks Your Language

A popular campaign for M&M’s is taking on a Spanish accent.
A caricature of actor Wilmer Valderrama is featured in a print ad for M&M’s aimed at Hispanic consumers.
The campaign, which carries the theme “There’s an M&M in everyone,” presents human beings who assume the looks and characteristics of the walking, talking candies that have sold M&M’s products since 1995.
The English-language ads were introduced in January 2007 by BBDO Worldwide in New York, part of the Omnicom Group. The Spanish-language ads, due to begin appearing next Monday, carry the theme “Uncover the fun inside yourself. Become an M&M.”
The campaign is being introduced by LatinWorks in Austin, Tex., an agency that specializes in marketing to Spanish-speaking people. LatinWorks and BBDO are corporate siblings; Omnicom owns a minority stake in LatinWorks.

The Spanish-language ads, like the English ads, will offer renderings of celebrities as M&M’s to convey the idea of unleashing one’s inner M&M. That is being underscored with a sentence in the new ads: “Have fun like a star with M&M’s.”

DirecTV to Launch New Network Azteca Mexico

(MediaWeek)– June 5, 2008, -By John Consoli.
Azteca Mexico will offer exclusive programming from TV Azteca’s three Mexican networks.DirecTV will launch a new 24-hour, satellite-only Hispanic network, Azteca Mexico that will be aired through DirecTV Mas in the U.S.
Azteca Mexico will offer exclusive programming from TV Azteca’s three Mexican networks, which will differ from programming viewers currently receive on Azteca America.
Azteca Mexico will air on Channel 442 nationally on DirecTV beginning June 11.
The programming will include Mexican novelas, news from TV Azteca’s Hechos; and reality and entertainment shows, along with Venga la Alegria, TV Azteca’s morning show.
