Career Opportunity: Latin America Advocacy Coordinator

LOCATION: Mexico City or Washington, D.C.
The Latin America Advocacy Coordinator will act as the focal point for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) International Resource Center’s activities in Latin American countries. S/he will be responsible for the day to day support provided to national and regional NGOs to identify and mount high impact campaigns which will change government policy on the ground S/he will work closely with senior CTFK team members to develop and implement policy goals and action plans for priority Latin American countries. S/he will coordinate CTFK activities in Latin America in collaboration with NGOs, media and state-actors, drawing on the Resource Center’s media, research and legal support as needed. S/he will work with in-country entities to develop advocacy and capacity grants proposals and to assure that these grants are used in
effective advocacy. S/he will work with other partners to strengthen NGO capability and effectiveness.
* Develop and maintain an excellent understanding of the political system and influencing factors in Mexico/Latin America. Identify and develop relationships with contacts who can provide access to decision makers.
* Work with CTFK, Bloomberg Initiative teams and local partners to develop specific policy goals and action plans for priority countries.
* Facilitate the achievement of Bloomberg agreed goals by supporting NGOs, governments and, where appropriate, becoming actively involved in promoting media advocacy, journalism training, lobbying and related initiatives.
* Liaise with CTFK International Resource Center staff to assure provision of communications, legal and research support as needed.
* Work with international and local partners to strengthen in-country civil society/NGO expertise and effectiveness. This may include identifying successful advocates from other fields and
“recruiting” them into tobacco control.
* Work with grantees to support successful execution of grant projects.
* Identify and work with potential grantees to develop meaningful grant proposals to progress towards agreed policy goals.
* Maintain close coordination with PAHO, research organizations, government entities, and other BGI partners active in Latin America.
* A minimum of 7 years in-country, relevant experience; proven track record of advocacy success.
* Excellent analytical, writing and public speaking skills.
* Excellent organizational skills; ability to balance and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced, changing environment.
* Ability to work internationally with remote management/partners .
* Fluent in Spanish and English; Portuguese a plus.
* Tobacco control experience a plus but not required.
