Volunteer Opportunity with Spanish Language Media Outlets

Feria Para Aprender para padres y niños- Call to Volunteers
The Austin Spanish-language media outlets, including Univision TV & Radio, ¡Ahora Si!, TVAzteca, LATV, and ESPN Deportes have joined efforts to promote one unified message related to the importance of educational attainment and success in the Hispanic community. The second annual Feria Para Aprender on Saturday, February 16 will be an informative event that will exhibit local community programs and connect primarily Spanish-speaking families to the resources and services that best meet their needs. 6,000 attendees are expected and community volunteers are greatly needed.
Date: Saturday, February 16, 2008
Time: 10:00-3:00 pm. Volunteer shifts are flexible.
Location: Burger Activity Center, 3200 Jones Road, Austin

Participating Organizations: Local Spanish-language media (Univision, BMP Radio, El Rumbo, ¡Ahora Si!, ESPN Deportes), Austin Partners in Education, United Way Capital Area, Austin ISD, and various educational non-profits.
Activities: Volunteers will serve as Bilingual Guides and help primarily Spanish-speaking parents navigate the event to find the information most pertinent to their child’s educational needs. Other volunteer positions include greeters, translators, children’s reading area assistants, survey-takers, food stand volunteers, etc.
Skills: Willingness to interact with Latino Austin ISD parents. At least an intermediate ability to communicate in both Spanish and English.
To volunteer or to be included in future updates, please send your name, email and phone number to bjimenez@austinpartners.org by Friday, February 1.
The Feria Para Aprender is an unprecedented and extraordinary opportunity for community-based programs to collaborate with the media and better serve Spanish-language Austin ISD families. We hope community volunteers will join us in making this a successful event

I have an masters in Spanish and am interested in using my fluent spoken Spanish in a low-pressure environment once or more a week (during the evening or weekends). I am eager to make new Spanish-speaking friends and help out in the process. Thanks.
