A panel of state legislators will analyze the immigration bills proposed in the Texas House of Representatives The panel will discuss the current “hot button” immigration issues and the arguments on both sides of the debate. A question and answer session will follow.

Senator Eliot Shapleigh — serves on the Texas Senate’s Committees on Internation Relations and Trade, and Transportation and Homeland Security. Has been awarded the Mexican American Bar Association’s Texas Legislator of the Year, and was named the “Conscience of the Senate” by Texas Monthly. Senator Shapleigh will speak about Education issues,

Representative Pete Gallego represents Texas District 74, the district with the largest U.S./Mexico border, nearly 39,000 square miles. He is Chair of the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus, and is an expert on the state budget.. Representative Gallego will speak about Economic / Budgetary issues

Representative Juan Escobar served as an officer for the US Border Patrol for 24 years before becoming a state Representative. He has served on both the Border & International Affairs Committee and the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. He will speak about Law Enforcement / Border Patrol

Representative Garnet Coleman has been the Texas Legislature’s leading champion for low-cost healthcare and insurance for children and working families. He was named one of Texas’ Ten Best Legislators once by the Hispanic Journal and twice by Texas Monthly. Representative Coleman will speak about Healthcare,

Representative Eddie Rodriguez is currently a student at UT Law School. He has filed House Concurrent Resolution 64, coauthored by 18 other legislators, requesting that the US Department of Homeland Security consider alternatives to detention of undocumented immigrants. He has been an outspoken leader on issues of poverty, affordable housing, and health and human services. Representative Rodriguez will speak about Immigrant Detention,
