A few years after the Cuban Revolution, the film critic and Cuban director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea produced one of the best films of Latin American history: “Memorias del Subdesarrollo” (Memories of Underdevelopment). Based on the novel of Edmundo Desnoes, this 1968 production depicts the life of a Cuban intellectual that decided to stay in Cuba after 1961. The plot unfolds around this central figure, exemplifying the new poetics of the ICAIC (”Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industrias Cinematográficos”), and therefore setting new standards for cuban film makers.
